I wrote an upcoming piece for findingDulcinea about growing an herb garden. (Though the herb feature isn’t yet live, there is a nice Web Guide to Gardening available on the site now.) Mid-way through, I took lunch at the local garden center. After reading so much great advice and looking at so many pictures, I couldn’t wait until EOD to get dirt under my fingernails. Some of my favorite source include The Victory Garden on PBS and the Gardening section of the BBC.
I was nervous: the little moss ball I grew in my New York apartment last year dried and turned into a sallow brown heap of naked twigs when left untended at Christmas. And as I’ve mentioned, the strawberries I planted here in Houston have not exactly thrived (I suspect this has something to do with the dog, who likes to dig at the soft dirt…for the same reason I decided to use the patch for my own ease-of-planting.)
I have had some success growing herbs in pots, however: the lavender, lemon thyme, cilantro, basil and Italian oregano that have their own elevated terrariums have escaped Lupe’s rasping claws and done pretty well.
I’m going to spend much of the summer back and forth from Texas to New York, so I hesitate to plant much else. For now my salads, omelets and roasts have been much improved by home-grown sprigs. I may also be inadvertently growing my own escargot! I highly recommend getting a couple of small pots going. High yields and rewards for a relatively small effort.
