I am a young woman, learning to cook. Raised by a professional pair of parents, there was little consistency in the kitchen–except at the holidays. I am from a Polish family that celebrates Wigilia and our Christmas tradition was always strictly enforced. Days of food preparation, an unchanging menu, specific eating times and exact methods of preparing food ensued from December 22nd through the 26th. But the lack of such culinary culture throughout the rest of the year left me longing to learn the traditions of food cooking and preparation. I am convinced that it is possible to make a mini-holiday around each meal. Unfortunately, my grandmother died before she could teach me all of her kitchen tricks and my mother continues to do more important things with herself than cook. Or so she thinks.

A new generation of women has emerged with the great luxury of being able to marry the professional and the domestic–thank you Grandma for being such a good housewife, and thank you Mom for leveling the professional playing field for women of my generation. But I want it all: a career and great knife skills. For now, I have a very fulfilling job and am determined to have a kitchen that glows with good things, 365 days a year. This blog is an account of my path to good-cookery: it will be running for quite a while. I have a long way to go before I can cook like Grandma.
